Hi, we just moved into our new home and in the yard there is a tree that has thorns and berries. Almost looks like two different trees grown together. Can anyone tell us what it may be?
Welcome to the forums.Glad you got your pics to work. I believe this is Pyrus calleryana. What you see as thorns, I see as short spurs with a very healthy pointed bud at the tip. The "berries".... small hard pears. http://s3.amazonaws.com/tneppc2/uploads/481/original/pyrus-calleryana.jpg http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/trees/photos/callery_pear1.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrus_calleryana
Probably a named pear cultivar grafted onto a seedling rootstock (or perhaps a clonal rootstock). At any rate - if this appears to be the situation - the different shoots coming from the bottom should be cut off.
Or two self-sown seedlings that came up close to each other. Quite likely considering the way it is so invasive in the eastern USA, often forming dense thickets.
