Nor Cal Large Deciduous to ID

    This tree in my yard is beginning to sprout leaves from pointed buds that are coming out looking like fat thorns and then unravelling into leaves -- please id.

    European Beech Fagus sylvatica. Looks to be a Copper Beech cultivar with leaves slightly coppery coloured.

    I took a picture of a dried fruit-casing from the last season, does not look like a berry.

    Yep, that's a beech cupule. Confirms Fagus sylvatica.
