This is the only shade tree in our back yard so we would like to save the tree. This area was infested with capenter ants last year. I painted the area white so that I could see if they were infesting it again. That is the white that you see. What concernes me is the black and orange growth. Any ideas what it is.

Looks like the fruiting body of a jelly fungus. I will say of the Tremella kind (& undoubtedly be wrong). You could re-post on the fungus forum. Those guys are GOOD.

If it's growing out of the tree like that, I venture to say your tree ain't healthy, which could explain the ants.
