This is my first post and I need some help.

I had a clematis (not jackmanii but it had big beautiful flowers with 5 petals - white tinged with mauve) A couple of years ago, the leaves turned brown like they were really dried out. There were not bugs that I could see. I came back the following spring and about mid-season the same thing happened. Someone told me I had a fungus that was attacking the plant. I didn't treat the soil or the plant with anything. This year it came back again but now is completely dead. The mini-rose planted beside it is now also sickly -leaves all gone but stems still there. I have other things planted in this garden I don't want to lose.

Is it a fungus that is spreading through the soil? or something else. Any suggestions as to what I can do about it?

    Thanks for the help.
    Liz
