My lemon tree has been in a container for a little over a year & needs repotting. When I pulled it out the roots were growing in a circle around the pot. Are you supposed to take ALL of the soil off ALL the roots or just the 2-3 inches outer layer & rough up the roots so they won't continue to grow in a circle? Thanks ahead for any comments.

Never mind. I didn't read long enough to find the answer before I sent this question but I found it. Sorry.

If you continue to use the common round nursery type of containers, your tree's root will forever begin to grow in a circle when the root tip reaches the container wall. The only way to keep this from happening is to grow your tree in a Air Pruning Root Maker container. - Millet (1,234-)
