    Hi Allelopath,
It could be Phaeolus: Were the near at conifer tree bases and were any large enough to start forming rosettes? Often there are crumbled dark remains of old fruiting bodies at same site, last years fruitings.
When I saw this I was wondering if any had the start of any teeth at the sides, as it also resembles a young Hydnellum that grows in my regions.
    cheers
