This is growing up the ironwork of our side porch. Previous owner planted a lot of ornamental shrubs and trees around the property but I've been unable to identify this one yet. Any ideas?
Welcome Ryes dad. Looks like Ampelopsis brevipedunculata. . Common name porcelain berry. http://images.google.com/images?hl=...ries&btnG=Search+images&aq=f&oq=&aqi=&start=0
That would be it! Thanks very much, Silver Surfer. Once I had the identification, I came across this: Porcelain berry, Ampelopsis brevipedunculata – This plant is still sold by nurseries. Don’t buy it especially if you live in the eastern half of the US. Any idea why? Only reason I can think of is the fact that it's a fast grower and an excellent climber. I'd hate to have to yank it out...it's doing a nice job keeping our porch in the shade and provides a home to about 30 sparrows. Again, thanks for your speedy ID! Matt
The only reason I can think of is that in some places it is concidered an invasive species. This link seems to say it is a problem in the Eastern U.S.A. http://www.invasive.org/species/subject.cfm?sub=3007
