Want to clear your pond or fountain of string algae within hours? Use hydrogen peroxide. I have a 270 gallon pond, and I pour 1 qt in it. Works wonders! Will not harm fish, and will not harm floaters or marginals. However it might discolor and kill submerged plants (oxidizers) by bleaching out the chlorophyll.

Barley straw, used by many for this, works by producing hydrogen peroxide as it decomposes. And remember, within hours, H2O2 is broken down to H20 and oxygen. My local fish supplier uses it to revive ailing or weak fish. If it is used too often, however, when fish are present, it can affect the slime on their scales.

For a large fountain, use one pint and allow it to circulate- - within one or two hours you'll wonder where the green went!
