We planted a young Copper Beech Tree last Fall. It's trunk is about 8" in perimeter and it's about 10' tall. We live on the coast in RI. Over the Winter the tree got a crack in the bark, which has grown to about 2.5" in length and is an inch wide. There seem to be a couple of other cracks developing also. Only half of the leaves have come back. Can it be helped, and if so, how?

suns scald is when the sun scalds the bark. aka sunburn... some trees have thin bark and are susceptible to injury from direct sunlight.

IIt was in full sun at the nursery. If it is sun scald, how much damage has been done and is it repairable?
