I recently bought a house in Abbotsford, which came with a large group of irises that I would like to identify. They're quite tall, over 3', with multiple buds on each stem. The buds are black, but open to a dark purple with orange markings. Any idea what variety this is?

    Welcome seawren.

Looks like a bearded Iris. There are 100's of named cultivars.

Similar to Dynamite (picture attached) but not quite. My advice is to search the Internet for iris nurseries with a catalogue searchable by colour.

Yes, hundreds, if not thousands. Two can look close and not be the same introductions at all.

    Seawren,
    Try this group http://www.brightonparkiris.com/links.html
It is the American Iris Society, but they have a group that keep true to the old, or as they say, Heritage Iris.
Yours appears to possibly be one of the older types; less fluffy than the newer ones. Just a thought. ;)) barb
