My Japanese Maple has a green stem (still alive, but the branches seem dead). its only a foot and a half tall, and won't sprout new leaves. Since it's spring, I didn't want to prune it. I can if I have to though. what can I do to keep it alive and allow it to flourish? Thanks for any response. ( The stems seem green when i sctatched the surface of the tiny branch)

The only thing you can do is wait to see if it will sprout. Don't do any pruning or other drastic measures. If you don't see new leaves soon, the plant is a gonner...
