Unknown flowering tree

    Could someone identify this tree, please? This tree has the most amazing smelling little purple flowers in early spring. (no pics, sorry) The leaves are on green branches that completely fall off in the fall. This tree is located in southeastern North Carolina. Don't know if it was planted or is native to the area.
