Hi everyone, I'm looking for some suggestions for heritage rhodos that are available in the nursery trade. Looking to restore an older arts and crafts style garden in West Van and wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Thank you.
Hi there, I put this question to some friends in the Vancouver Rhodo Society (which I encourage you to join - fun garden club!). I am sure you will get some answers momentarily!!
According to Sunset Publishing 'Cynthia' and 'Pink Pearl' were prevalent on the West Coast in the late 19th century. And I can say these two still are - 'Cynthia' in particular is the 'Kanzan' cherry of hybrid rhododendrons in my area, you can hardly avoid its rosy crimson, conical trusses at flowering time.
Here are some suggestions forwarded to me by Sue, an experienced and knowledgeable member of the VRS... If she is just looking for turn of the century plants (before 1945), she can find -Catabiense Alba -Carita and its various forms -Bopeep -Jan Dekens -Carmen -Conroy -J.G. Millais -Jean Marie de Montague -Romany Chal -Ramapo -Purple Splendour -Mrs. G.W. Leak -Mrs. E. C. Sterling -Mrs. Furnivall -Mrs. Tom H. Lowinsky -Mrs. W. C. Slocock -Myrtifolium -Mrs. A.T. de la Mare -Mrs. Betty Robertson -Daphnoides -A Bedford There are more in Greer's catalogue.
Thank you all so much for this information! I'm looking forward to doing more research on these rhodos! Cheers, Sarah
"Sappho" white with dark purple blotch. It tends to be leggy but is stunning with the righr under/foreground planting.
