Hello, I was wondering if anyone could share their thoughts on what their definitions (or commonly-known definitions) of the "West Coast Gardenesque Style" is. Can you think of well-known West Coast Gardenesque examples/post some photos of them? I only have a vague description right now: Lots of broadleaved trees and shrubs, lots of sculptural and visual material, mostly evergreen with about 30% deciduous material. Could one simply apply the common definition for a Gardenesque garden style, with the elements of Japanese/Asian influence (that prevail in many designs here in Vancouver) to get a definition of West Coast Gardenesque?
Suggest taking a look at the works of Thomas Dolliver Church (Donnell Gardens, Sonoma County, CA: wrote Gardens Are For People, 1983) and Garrett Eckbo (Fulton Mall, Fresno, CA: wrote Landscape For Living, 1950). http://www.stanfordalumni.org/news/magazine/2003/janfeb/features/church.html http://www.ced.berkeley.edu/cedarchives/profiles/eckbo.htm Rudolph Ulrich is worth reading about, too: http://www.pacifichorticulture.org/articles/65/4/rudolph-ulrichs-arizona-gardens/
