Another forum member and I would like to ask the group if anyone knows where in the USA we can buy a reliably-variegated 'Kagero'. I have spoken with 3 large & respected maple suppiers none of whom have a 'Kagero' that regularly variegates. I read the photo gallery topic on 'Kagero' but that supplier is European (and good) but not available for shipment to the USA. Any thoughts? Thank you.
Sorry Mike, I cannot be of help here. However I take the opportunity to share my experience with this selection. I have tried 'Kagero' twice from two different European suppliers and in both cases the variegation just lasted one season. They are in a corner of the garden just 'in case', but after two seasons it does not seem to come back and I will probably give those nice green palmatums away. I do not think I will try again. I bought Kagero from France two years ago with the promise of beautiful variegation (the sellers photographs) I have yet to see any :(
Sam, I am sorry to hear your Maillot 'Kagero' you mentioned buying on the Photo Gallery 'Kagero' thread 2 years ago has shown NO variegation. Very disappointing indeed. Thanks so much for the feedback. Mike
I happen to know of an unknown maple that produces occasional yellow variegation very similar to Kagero. It could be a Kagero, but it could be a variegated seedling for all we know (I talked to the current caretaker and he only knew that it had been an unlabeled gift). I'll have to go take a look at it in the next week or two to see if there is any variegation present, then I may graft a couple to see if it holds. I've looked for this maple for a while, but I've always been hesitant to do a blind buy due to it's reputation. I have enough plain green seedlings as is.
Mike, With all your seedlings, have you not run into any with this sort of variegation? I know of someone who was contemplating the introduction of a seedling with fairly strong yellow variegation on a palmate leaf (I believe), but I am not sure what happened with it.
They are rarely stable. The only "variegated" seedlings that I've come across have been solid white/yellow and shortly died, or they have grown out of the variegation. I have some good reticulated seedlings that appear stable but that is it.
After a further 5 years I have still not seen any variegation whatsoever on my Kagero. My tree is planted in shade where I am told variegation is more likely than in full sun. Can anyone confirm this? Or should it be the other way round?
