Hi - this is my first post; sorry if this has been addressed before.

A magnolia tree in our small backyard seems to have withered after the winter. We thought it would grow fresh leaves in the spring but the growth has been limited to the lower half of the tree. The bottom of the trunk nearest the roots has lots of fresh leaves sprouting, while a few of the branches around the middle also have new growth. However, closest to the top is where the problem lies. All the branches are devoid of any new buds or leaves.

We have been watering the tree regularly and the only difference we've seen with regular watering is that some of the empty top branches seem to be slowly changing color to a mossy green hue as opposed to a dry brownish type color.

Can anyone advise as to what's going on with this tree and if we need to prune some of the dead branches to make room for new growth? Also, what should we do with the leaves at the bottom of the tree? Cut them or let them grow there?

    Thanks!!!

Looks like the top part is dead, or nearly dead.

Keep what foliage there is, it will re-grow to replace the lost foliage. In a few months you can cut out the dead shoots above the topmost new green shoots.
