Staghorn Sumac trees

Discussion in 'Woody Plants' started by L.Baran, Sep 17, 2003.

  1. My staghorn sumacs are not setting fruit. They display a spray of flowers in spring but for some reason they do not ripen into fruit clusters. Any ideas why not?

    All thoughts appreciated.

Staghorn sumac, Rhus typhina, are either male or female! Thus you need to have one of each to get fruit.
In the spring, take a flower to your local garden centre or to an advise clinic to find out which you have.

This brings a thought I've never considered before - can male plant parts be grafted onto female trees, or female onto male trees?
