Hi everyone, we found this strange plant growing in one of our containers in the garden. It is 10 inches tall so far, and we thought at first maybe it was Taro from the leaves, but the tendril is throwing us off, any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Welcome to UBC forums exunazares. Looks like an Arisaema sp. The tendril is part of the spadix appendix. After leaves open fully you may be able to id it. see... http://www.chadwellseeds.co.uk/_/rs...kn20040374) 2-7-09d.JPG?height=1028&width=759 https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=a...#tbm=isch&q=arisaema+spadix+appendage&spell=1 Sometimes this "tail" can be really long and touch the ground. I am not sure why the plant has this. My thoughts are to allow insects to crawl up into the spadix to aid fertilisation...but that is a guess. Afterwards you get super red berries. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=a...VcbTGMTiO6gS&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1536&bih=728
Thanks Silver Surfer! :) I think maybe you nailed it! :) Yes I could have waited till it opened up, but the suspense was killing me. ;)
