Have filled another small bucket with black walnut shells and readying to place them around the bases of the young fruit trees. This practice, plus sprinkling of wood ashes, is an old family tradition. My maternal grandparents had an income producing fruit orchard before chemicals ruled...and this was a fun task for me. Also, after walnuts were hulled in the fall, the hulls were place around the fruit trees.

Anyone heard of this? Have often had bumper crops-but sometimes note presence of a few borers. Any ideas on why this is or is not effective?

I have read that black walnuts have anti-vermin activity and figure that the rain dilutes these chemicals gradually to aid the trees. Even so, I do find the soil 1-2' from the fruit tree bases has earthworms, so feel okay about continuing my long time practice.
