I a new to dahlias but dug one up last fall that had been in the yard since we moved here, 4 years ago, for the first time. I wrapped the tubers in newspapers and left them in our unheated attached garage over the winter. When I unwrapped the packages today I found shriveled tubers and no eyes or signs of life :(

Are they dead? What did I do wrong?

They always look dead. I thought the same thing when I bought some from a garage sale many years ago, and thought I got ripped off. But soon after I planted them in May, they sprouted and thrived! Some I've dug up since, and only the brutal winter of '08 destroyed some of them (the best-looking ones, of course!). So there's hope yet.
