I've been walking the forests of northern New Mexico (USA) for about 10 years now, looking for mushrooms. I just had my first encounter with this species. I was stunned.

Some anecdata on the species ... I've returned to this site 1 year later and today, 2 years later, and have not seen it. Last year I was not too surprised because the rains hadn't started yet. This year, however, the rains started about 2 weeks ago, but still nothing. There's no mention in my books of it being transient ... maybe next year.
