I realize that both of these maples are crosses of the red maple and the silverleaf maple. I wonder if either of these are as brittle (that is susceptible to wind damage) as the siverleaf maple?

My understanding in that the Acer x freemanii hybrids have inherited the best of each parent (Acer rubrum & Acer saccharinum). The leaf shape and lower surface color are similar to the silver maple. The bonus of the cross with the red maple is that the hybrids exhibit the outstanding fall color or the "reds" (even in warmer winter areas), are more durable, less prone to breakage, and more tolerant of wind.

Particular attributes vary with cultivar. Are these used much where you are located? Might want to check local climate and soil suitability. Where adapted very commonly planted, many have erect habits thought suitable for narrow spaces. However, like parents large-growing trees.
