Does anyone know the name of the aster that grows in an even, rounded mound - the one I saw had blue flowers with long, thin petals. My asters are the floppy, messy type. . .

    Thanks,

Too many of these to tell from this description. Maybe you can spot same or similar now in bloom at a local outlet.

There are so many forms as RonB has commented and for the flower form you saw, looking at nursery is a good idea.
The asters that we have were quite floppy and leggy the first fall, but we prune them
in the summer by atleast 1/3 - 1/2 to promote a more dense growth habit. If we do any further pruning, it is only pinching out growing tips, but not after July/Aug.

Mine are the floppy messy type too. I think I will prune them nest year.
