maple disease?, tiny orange blisters

  1. Hi, my crimson sentry maple has died. It had an area of about 1" x 12" on the trunk that was covered in tiny orange blisters, the orange stuff was powdery looking. It was fine last year but this developed. I had a Japanese maple with the same sort of thing a few years ago.

what is this, and can it be prevented?
    thanks,
    Maplea
