I'm new to southwest washington, but have 2 bushes in my yard that I have no been able to identify. One looks like poison oak, but doesn't seem to contain some of the "must-haves" (ie. top leaf petiole, alternating branching) The other has thick leaves like a magnolia.

Can anyone ID these? The look as if they were planted as part of landscaping at some point in the past, but I've found volunteers of the first popped up all over the property.

Oregon ash and English laurel. Poison oak produces shorter, glossier, deeper green leaves with lobed margins that turn red in fall, on a many stemmed clumping shrub or tree climbing vine.

    Ron,

Is it typical to see the Ash as a 3' shrub? It looks as if the bush was planted as part of landscaping around a deck.

Or it could be a sprouting stump, the tree having been cut down by a previous occupant.
