I have a mature ( 40 years +/-) silver maple tree in my backyard. At first glance, it appears to be very healthy with large full leaves. We have regularly had it pruned. It is fairly close to our house so one side of the tree is not very visilble. Per chance, I happened to be looking closely at the tree and noticed a large split in the bark (about 24" long and 2" wide.) When I felt inside the split the surface was smooth and there did not appear to be any rotting. I spoke to a friend and he said he thought is was a "canker." I wonder if this is a cause for concern and if there is anything I can do to help the tree. It would be a big loss for us.
    Thanks for any suggestions, Nick

That part may be splitting apart inside, perhaps posing a hazard to structures or objects nearby. Have a qualified arborist look at it - soon.
