Something is causing my sumac tree to shed its fruit...leaving a naked stem behind (see photo).

This is the second year that it has happened. I would be quite happy to cut it down as the runners keep popping up in my flower garden and the "shedding" of the fruit is leaving a terrible mess in our pool and water feature (not to mention the mess all over the garden and lawn), but my husband likes it (he's not the one at war with baby sumac in the flower garden though).

Can anyone "shed" light on what's going on here?

    Please and thanks!

Through further research, I've discovered that I'm using the wrong terminology. It's the flowers that have fallen off prematurely.
