Prune Tree Pruning

Discussion in 'Fruit and Nut Trees' started by Unregistered, Nov 19, 2005.

  1. I have both a Green Gauge and an Italian prune trees. I would like to know when and how to prune these trees. The Green Gauge has long new growth that is up to 3 feet long that is growing everywhere. This year I did not have many Green Gauge or Italian prunes to pick. If I prune both trees hard will that affect next years crop. Please advise the proper pruning Methods. Ed

I have a Italian prune in my backyard. I found it worked the best when I didn't prune it at all. 8' high and 8' in diameter and have pulled off 3 40lb apple boxes off it.
I am going to try to proune my new prune like an apple 2' off the ground, branch 4 ways, 18 inch, branch2 or 3 ways 18 inch, branch, etc so that light get thru the tree. You have to stress the tree. Once the tree is stressed it will try to propegate(form seeds)- fruit.
