I wanted to build some planters in which to grow vegetables.
I know not to use treated or creosote-soaked wood. Is any other wood all right to use? Would it be as hard to grow things in cedar as it is to grow things under it?

Alison--my understanding is that there are no issues with cedar in containers.

Apparently the belief that plants will be harmed by cedar products is not only incorrect, but cedar in container soil mixes seems to actually have positive effects. This was the info given by the largest perennial grower in the Fraser valley here, which now uses cedar in it's potting mix.

Please correct this, anyone with conflicting data. I was a bit surprised at what they were saying there, but these guys would be on the cutting edge of things horticultural...

So, I'd go with the cedar planters myself. Some cedar has preservatives added on top of the natural rot resistance, so do take care that it is the natural wood only...
