what's my hedge? Better picture, I hope

A friend admired our hedge and asked what it is.
I had to admit I didn't know and said I'd try to find out.
Can you folks help me out?
    Thanks in advance!

The plant looks very much like Rhamnus cathartica (European buckthorn); although not knowing where you are growing the hedge (Saskatoon?) is making it difficult to narrow down the possibilities. Check out this site from the Plant Conservation Alliance Alien Plant Working Group. If it doesn't look like your plant, re-scan a branch using higher resolution and repost the image.

As this is a dioecious species (separate female and male plants), yours may not produce fruit. It is probably preferable to have a male plant anyway, since the berries are taken by birds and spread around (and the plant is a noxious weed).
