Has anyone ever heard of rock rot in pear trees. My tree surgeon tells me there is no cure and the tree should come down asap. The fruits develope as normal except they turn as hard as rock. Any information would be appreciated.

Sounds made up, but I'm no plant doctor. My understanding of pears is that you have to pick them when they look ripe but are hard (perhaps like a rock). Then keep them in cold storage for a month, then you can let them ripen. [simplified version, depends on variety] Check out info at a good fruit tree nursery -- try Keepers since you're in UK. (They have a website.) Maybe your "surgeon" just wants some business.
    Hope this info helps.
