I planted two Akebono Cherry trees a year ago sometime in November. They were doing well in the Spring: flowering and then beautiful green leaves emerged. But later this year starting late July the leaves started to wilt with brown edges around them. Now it's November, the trees still have their leaves but they don't look healthy. PLEASE HELP!

We live somewhat close to the Bay in Marin County near San Francisco (zone 9). The soil is heavy clay but I amended it and planted the trees on raising beds. I was trying not to over water it but this summer I had to because we didn't get any rain. One tree is by the house another one is on the lawn though.

I also have Kwansan tree and it's doing very well.

    I attached the photos.

    Thank you!!!

I don't know much about growing trees, but from what you said, the leaves started to go brown and wilt during the dry summer weather. Those particular leaves are not going to green up. Those trees will drop their leaves in the winter even in California, won't they? The tree doesn't look that bad to me. You may as well wait to see how it does next spring.

I hope someone who knows more than I do will reply.

Thank you for your response wcutler!

I should've posted the photo of the healthy tree in the fall: the leaves look more round without the brown edges and they have beautiful orange and yellow fall colors.

Hopefully, next year the trees will look better.

Yes, nice. But once they suffered the heat damage, they can't straighten out and look like that. And some years are better for fall colour than others. If they're holding on to their leaves, they're probably fine. Next year, they get to start over.
