We have 2 kousa dogwood trees that were planted about 4 years ago. They have both done well until recently. One in particular did not bloom as heavily this spring as the other and does not have as many (very few) "berries" as the other. The leaves appear to be drooping and have a dryish look as compared to the other tree. The trunks on both trees have bark that is flaking off. We have had a recycled rubber tree ring around the bases of both trees to prevent grass from growing around the bases. They shouldn't be lacking water as we have had a very wet spring and summer here in KY and use our sprinkler system when things do get too dry.

You may have nothing to worry about. It is possible that if trees bloomed heavily last year they are resting a bit this season. The drooping leaf is common and not always a concern, particularly if the trees are located in a hot area.

Thanks. One other thing I failed to mention is that the leaves on this tree have what look like small dark purple spots on the under side. Any thoughts???

The purple spots could be the start of Anthracnose fungal disease which is common on Dogwoods. This could cause your dogwood to look the way it does.

Behavior described indicates tree is having problems. Maybe try your state Cooperative Extension Service office for help with diagnosis. There is probably a web site up listing locations of local offices. It may also have information about a diagnostic service, in which case you would be likely to be paying a small fee and mailing specimens to a lab somewhere in the state.
