Hello everyone. I just bought a house with a variety of small palms and have been trying to figure out what the pruning requirements are for them. The attached images are of one I cannot figure out. Does anyone know what this palm is? And if so, is there a pruning method to help make it not look so monstrous? Much appreciated.
A Washingtonia palm. In general, palms can't be pruned, except for trimming off the old dead leaves at the bottom of the trunk.
It will grow much taller, to eventually consist of a long bare stem with a tuft of leaves on top. Southern California has thousands of examples of such dispersed about the inhabited landscape.
Indeed. I suppose this could seem to appear strange to some because of the browning, but thinking on it and considering how the trunk forms, this would be a normal appearance!
