Whle my initial introduction to members of the Lycopsida was with Lycopodiella and Lycopodium, my focus has shifted to Selaginella, especially members of the sub-genus Tetragonostachys, which are the prominent North American native species. These species often called Spike Mosses are relatively unknown. To remedy this and to compile all relevant information into an easy to use database I have put together a series of links. The first series of links are to the efloras.org pages that pertain to each of the NATIVE species of Selaginella in the United States. Non-native species are excluded. Note that the species listed also cover those found within Canada. Below is a link to my Photobucket pages regarding Selaginella. Please use the links on the left side to access the subsections shown. I am adding this link because many, if not most of the links above do real justice to the plants with imagery that helps in their identification. My site is designed to provide such information as well as what research I am doing in cultivation of the noted plants. http://s152.photobucket.com/albums/s184/jwcimage/Selaginella/
Perhaps the best site of all on the net on four species of Selaginella found in Washington is at this link. http://biology.burke.washington.edu/herbarium/imagecollection.php?Genus=Selaginella&Species=densa Use the links on the left to access the other three species found in the state. This is a great site and is very comprehensive in the information provided.

In the above links on images, the link to a plant of S. mutica is very similar to S. weatherbiana: http://herbarium.biology.colostate.edu/slides/selaginella_mutica.html The link to S. weatherbiana is this: http://nmrareplants.unm.edu/rarelist_single.php?SpeciesID=167 The basic difference is that S. weatherbiana has underground rhizomes. Superficially S. mutica occurs as mats of spreading stems and S. weatherbiana as clumps of sprawling stems. Here is a site featuring S. mutica that shows the species as ocrruing in both mats and clumps! http://tchester.org/gc/plants/species/selaginella_mutica.html The other notable superficial traits deliineating the two is the occurrence of rhizophores along the spreading stems of S. mutica whereas in S. weatherbiana they are restricted to the base of the stems or the underground rhizomes.
