Japanese maples that tolerate shade well (Zone 5)

    Thanks, AlainK, the fact that Butterfly does well in a wide range of conditions, makes it all the more the desirable as you point out.

    I've just planted my Butterfly in the ground in half shade, but it spent 3 years in a pot in full sun, never ever had burnt leaves, so I agree with AlainK

    I have orange dream under a very large evergreen Magnolia grandiflora, it's about 9-0" tall and positively thrives with great colour all year in quite heavy shade.

    I am excited to have received two maples today. I have several spots I could put them but I am wondering if they would survive in full to dappled shade with little direct sunlight. Thanks for your advice.

    - Acer japonicum 'Fairy Lights'
    - Acer japonicum 'Abby's weeping'
