    Here is a picture of Acer palmatum 'Beni shichihenge'. This little variegated maple is a slow growing shrub. I made this picture in June 2003.

    Mine is in its first year since being in the ground, and has put out a lot of shoots with pure green large leaves. But I'm confident they'll go back to the dainty, variegated form next year!
    This is a late May picture, so the striking coral pink of summer is almost gone. (It was also being eaten by deer, and had to be protected!)

    Even if it was not written on the tag, I think this is a Beni shichihenge

    Hi, I would say that ciltiavr looks more like a 'Higa sa yama'

    My Beni is basically green leaf with some pink and a little cream variegations

    Your tree looks like it has more of a shigatsu type creamy background with pink/green sprinkled in.

    Compare it to the Higa sa yama and see what you think. The 'Higasayama is a very nice cultivar'

    Thank you Mike.

    I have checked in the Vertree's and you seem to be right.

    Do you know what means 'Higa sa yama' in Japanese ?

    Andre and Mike:

    Acer palmatum Higasayama :) or as Vertrees spells it Higasa yama, I like the one word spelling my self.

    Well, I have found the translation.
    Higasa = Parasol
    Yama = Mountain

    Here's a photo of the sunlight through the leaves of `Beni shichihenge', taken last August at the Washington Park Arboretum in Seattle.

    Best wishes,
    Carl

    This photo was taken April 28, 2007 and shows the intense shrimp/pink color (sometimes almost orange) at the margins. The green leaf color has a bluish tinge to it, making the contrast even greater. Later in the summer, the pinkish areas turn to a rust color.

    I think this tree has some of the most interesting colors all season long. The third picture is a double graft I did with a peaches and cream, two years old now and still kicking.

    This is one of my eBay purchases... really good price too. It's supposed to be 2 years old, and I just love the colors on the leaves, although most of the tree has lost that pink-ish hue, and is already the creamy-white color.

    p.s. Sorry, I don't know how to rotate the photos :-x

    Beni Shichihenge in our yard is absolutely beautiful this year. The picture doesn't even show it. About 3/4 of the tree is completely pink-orange. Hard to take a good pic of the whole tree....but here's a few leaves.

    Bonjour Cirque,
    Absolutely Beautiful, can't wait to see a full-size picture. My absolute fave variety is Shishishagira for leaf structure so far.

    Cirque, very nice.

    I'd like to add that I'm particularly happy with mine this year, too. Mine was an impulse buy (40% off). Since I only have room for a fraction of the maples I would really like, after I took it home I second guessed my decision and wondered if I should have instead brought home an 'Oridono nishiki'. I have since watched a large ON of similar size to my BS and I'm very pleased with my choice.

    Here are a couple of photos...one from late spring...the other from a few days ago. It's amazing how much the hot pink leaves have "bleached" to a soft pale lemon lime...the proportion of this coloration to the blue-green leaves is about 70/30 pink to green. This tree is located in a spot that gets filtered sun for most of the day. I'm not complaining....I think it's kinda interesting.....just a lot different from last year when it had more direct sunlight and was in a pot. The pink lasted through fall. Curious to see how this fall will be...last fall was extremely vivid.

    Regards,
    Cirque

    This has a great pink and green leaf. A bit on the twiggy side so dead wood is more of an issue.

    These are the best photos I've seen of 'Beni Shichihenge' and I thank you for sharing them. Outstanding.
