I just found out something way-cool: Loquat seeds germinate above the soil!

I tried getting them to sprout under the soil to no avail and now I know why! :D
This one is pure nature-made; no human interaction needed to create this beauty! *picture1*

Hey HollyBerry, try soaking the seeds I send you next until the brown outer layer peels off, and then set 'em down slightly beneath the soil.
I'm experimenting in my backyard with a few others since I've got the perfect micro-ecosystem (nice and humid) under the female tree. *picture2*

Your extra seeds will be shipped once smaragdina pm's me his/her mailing address.

p.s. smaragdina, I pm'd you already, but to pm someone else, click his/her username and select "Send a private message to ____"

The green ones are pretty too - thanks for sharing. In a short time, I will have seeds for both the green and the red maple varieties!

Royal Empress Tree (Paulownia tormentosa)Out of these
    White Sage

UnIDed cactus (see #19 http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=50942&highlight=iding+fun and feel free to post and IDs you may have :)

I can trade smaller amounts of these as well:
Spanish Tarragon/Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes lucida)
    Blue Passionflower (Passiflora caerulea)

I have also ordered some seeds recently and will add them to the list as they come in :)

If you want to try to see if I can get a hold of some seeds (especially Souther California native plant seeds) I am always willing to trek around to see if I can find something as well. Just PM me the scientific name so I can see what it looks like.

I am interested in trading for herbal/medicinal plants, entheo/ethnobotanical plants, edible plants, plants that attract hummingbirds/bees/ladybugs/butterflies/et c. and of course anything that is just stunningly beautiful :D

I just saw this thread so I'm going to have to take some time to sort through who I most want to trade with :) But feel free to make me an offer!

Haha!! I can (and will) definitely trade with more than one person! I just want to make sure I have enough seeds to go around as I love having a diverse collection all the time :)

I was actually interested in those loquat seeds ShearMe, and HL I'm sure you can come up with something to pleasantly surprise me with ;-)

I've just updated my list with these:

Here are some pics of the lavender and the unidentified flowering plant and its seedpods/seeds...I'll try to get an ID in the ID section if no one here can supply a name for her.

I just added 'Tamarillo' or 'Tomato Tree' seeds to my 'Have' list.

Lorax was kind enough to send me many seeds for sharing! I just sowed a few in soil only moments ago, after just having received them today - all the way from Ecuador!

    : O

    Thanks, Lorax.

Tomate de arbol? They're what I'd call a "swing fruit" - depending on how they're used, they're either main course or dessert. Superficially, they look like red-yellow eggs with long stems on them - Sherry, I think I sent a pic of the yellow ones with the seeds, or perhaps I'm mistaken. The tree gets about 4-5' tall, with huge leaves that are green-purple, and then bears clusters of fruit with attractive red skins and golden flesh. Potted ones normally bear fruit about the size of hen's eggs; in-ground, they get to about goose-egg size.

The flavour is similar to regular red tomatoes, a bit richer and less acidic, and there's way more meat than seed. They have to be blanched and peeled before eating (like field tomatoes). Google Images for Tomate de Arbol (Tamarillo)

Sherry, I've sent you two varieties if I'm not mistaken. The darker seeds, labeled "red" produce fruit with seeds coated in a deep red dye, that affects both the flavour and colour of the fruits (they're sweeter, more used for juice.) The paler seeds, labeled "yellow" produce fruit without this dye; these are better for sauces, and for stewing in sugar and cinnamon as a dessert.

I will have to look again, but I swore it just said 'red' on the packet you sent, and the seeds seemed to be all one color. No pictures this time. I didn't think there were 2 kinds, and nothing was mentioned about yellow - just red.

I am so excited about growing them, with all this great information I am hearing about them. I am so curious to see how they grow and produce. I've always wanted to try them. I will let you know when the seeds germinate...

    Thanks again, Beth.

    Your seed pal,

    Sherry.

Yes, gardening is becoming more and more popular. It is so much more rewarding than buying chalk - I mean vegetables, from the grocery store!
