Can you help ID this grass ?

    Again, our compost pile has produced another plant.
    Last year nothing, this year after turning pile this plant appeared and is very healthy and over 3 feet tall. Sheath shows overlapping margins, collar seems to be ciliate.
    Cross section of stem appears to more like a reed.
    Perhaps it is not a grass ?

    I think so. I suggest that this is large barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli; in the "Illustrated Flora of British Columbia" it is called Echinochloa crusgalli).

    Thanks Robert !..........It certainly agrees with the pictures I have pulled up on Echinochloa crusgalli. The leaves and stalk are identical. The seeds however, hang differently from the pictures I find i.e. the pictures on the internet show a more horizontal projection from the stem. Perhaps this is just a regional variation. Any thoughts ??
