identification for gree spiny seed pod

Discussion in 'Plants: Identification' started by Unregistered, Oct 10, 2004.

  1. I have a vine with fragrant small white flowers on it that produces a green spiny seed pod (about 2 inches long, 1 inch + across and oval). The seed pods fall off the vine, which is on the shared fence with the neighbours) and the ends split open to reveal dark brown/black seeds. What could it be? I am most concerned that it is not poisonous as I have dogs roaming the yars just looking for trouble.

    Thanks!

  2. Wild Cucumber

    Sounds like Echinocystis lobata

    Datura or Jimson Weed?

Both have prickly seed pods, round in shape. The flowers are very scented, however, the flowers are normally not small. Have you noticed if the flowers close during the day-time hours?

Another genus fitting this general profile is Marah, although I don't know if the flowers are noticeably aromatic. If this is a wild plant, it might help if you said where you are.
