OK, set a reminder for next year, and announce it to the scouts (next year) - we can have a "'Somei-yoshino'/'Akebono' Discovery Workshop on the Street" as soon as the 'Akebono' open up there.

I agree that your photos that you say are 'Somei-yoshino' do appear to be that.

    Re: Marpole-Afterglow

There is one Afterglow cherry tree on the west side of Heather St. at West 67 Ave. It was fully bloomed on April 8. This is the only place where you can see Somei-yoshino, Akebono and Afterglow. From the fifth photo, you can compare the color of Akebono with Afterglow.

    Re: Marpole-Afterglow

Just to be clear, the fifth photo shows 'Akebono', but not 'Afterglow'. That's a plum in that photo, isn't it, Joseph? You can compare the two cultivars in the separate photos.

At every 'Afterglow' location we know, it's planted with 'Akebono'. The city has the ones I've asked about listed as 'Akebono'. It would seem that they're all mistakes.

I'm not showing off any great photos here - I had to quickly snap these photos on the way to playing for a dance.
Those trees at the entrance are Kanzan. Photo was taken thru the windshield.

There is a single 'Shogetsu' on the entrance road to the complex, on the right, about halfway along.

The festival favourite 'Shirofugen' are in bloom on Cambie south of 57th all the way to Marine Drive.

I think Shirley and Kenny are right (and I'm so proud of them for standing their ground!). These all look like 'Somei-yoshino' to me.

I have some question about the one tree on the NE corner of 64th and French, which is far behind the others, but it does have some flowers open, and there doesn't seem to be a staminode or petaloid on it, or anywhere on the block.

By way of comparison, here are 'Akebono' four blocks away on 62nd at Montcalm, hardly open at all, which is the case for other 'Akebono' in this area.

These Somei-yoshino are located in front of the Historic Joy Kogawa House, which is located at 1450 West 64th Avenue. I visited this heritage house for organizing a Marpole Community heritage walk for City of Vancouver 2 weeks ago

Historic Joy Kogawa House is situated in the former home of the Canadian author Joy Kogawa (born 1935), where she lived until age six. It stands as a cultural and historical reminder of the expropriation of property that all Canadians of Japanese descent experienced after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Between 2003 and 2006, a grassroots committee fundraised in a well-publicized national campaign and, with the help of The Land Conservancy of BC, a non-profit land trust, managed to purchase the house in 2006. More info at http://www.kogawahouse.com/about

    Marpole, what cherry?

I wonder if somebody knows anything about these old trees around 67 & Heather? I went to see Afterglow and found so many of these cherries. They old and not healthy. But what double flowers can be at that time?

    Re: Marpole, what cherry?

'Takasago'. You've captured them perfectly. I always identify that cultivar by all that brown rot.

It looks like they're not on the map - do you remember about how many? On Heather? You're talking about several on the same block?

    Re: Marpole, what cherry?

Yes, there are several for sure, but I didn't count because I was sure I would find them on forum. Is this right time for bloom or too early? And they probably not together but close to each other maybe in different blocks

This is the right time for 'Takasago'. They're listed too late in the book, but we didn't do any re-organizing for the latest version. They should be before 'Mikuruma-gaeshi'.

For sure, they are Tagasago. I also saw them when I led cherry walk in Marpole Communty.

    Marpole - Kanzan

I took advantage of the sunshine on Friday, April 12th to walk over to Montcalm Street to photograph the pink Kanzan cherry blossoms. They have not disappointment me again this year. On the blocks from 70th to 72nd the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. They are the old cherry trees with the very wide sturdy trunks. There are also a few on Hudson Street from 70th to 72nd. Now is the time to see them before the next rains – no blossoms are on the ground yet.

    Re: * POSTED - Mikuruma-gaeshi - Marpole, 63rd from Ash to Heather

Here's a photo of this nice stretch of 63rd looking east from the Heather bike route. It was odd that nothing was blooming looking west on 63rd from Heather. Microclimate!

Still on the Cambie median (see South Cambie and Oakridge threads), now from the Canada Line station going north. I was checking out the
    .
Nadia posted this group of twelve 'Rancho' cherries last year, north from Marine Drive.
    20130402_CambieMarineDr_Rancho_Cutler_DSC07360.jpg 20130402_CambieMarineDr_Rancho_Cutler_DSC07364.jpg 20130402_CambieMarineDr_Rancho_Cutler_DSC07366.jpg 20130402_CambieMarineDr_Rancho_Cutler_DSC07377.jpg

Just north of them, at 64th, are seven young 'Akebono'. The Cambie Heritage Boulevard sign is around there somewhere.

At 63rd is a part 'Shirotae', part Avium.

Off Cambie, east on 64th are several 'Akebono'.

But the big show, or the first big show, is a block of 'Akebono' interspersed with pink plums, west of Cambie on 63rd.

63rd also has a 'Mikuruma-gaeshi' west of Ash

The next big show is a block of big old 'Akebono' on 64th west from Ash. Ron B asked to see big trunks one year. I've found some impressive ones. They're all 'Akebono', except for one, the one on the left in the first photo. The trunks and blossom pairs are each row from the same trees.

I forgot one 'Akebono' on the Marine Drive side of the Soka Gakkai International Buddhist Centre on Cambie, across from the Canada Line station.
