    Kanzan
The Kanzan cherry located in the RCMP parking lot has been completely taken over by the avium stalk. Very interesting.

In Dorchester Circle(7291 Moffatt Rd.), 4 vars of cherry trees are blooming at the same time. ie. Shirotae(12),Shogetsu(10), Shirofugen(7) and Kanzan(1). Very interesting combination.

Just to clarify for people, what you're showing in the previous posting are just 'Shirofugen' with the bronze leaves and 'Shogetsu' with the green leaves. That's a great location for comparing those two, and I like how you've managed to get them in the same photos.

Douglas Justice reported in an email that he noticed "a really great planting of 'Amanogawa'" in a strip mall at the corner of McMillan Way and Westminster Hwy against building facing west.

Douglas didn't include a photo (or do his own posting!), but he did say "If you place the Google Streetview Man at the corner, there's a view of the Amanogawas in bloom!" Here's the streetview link. Does that count?

They've gone a bit past their peak, but here they are. Photos taken 6 May 2011.

    Pink Perfection
Just remind that pink perfection in Steveston Village, on Chatham St, Richmond is fully blooming. Two are very healthy and awesome!

    Shorgetsu & Shirofugen

In Dorchester Circle (7291 ~97 Moffatt Road, Richmond) the ten Shogetsu and eight Shirofugen are in the peak of their blossoms. Some Shirofugen have begun turning rosy pink, their leaves changing to mostly green (pictures #4&5).

The Shogetsus are displaying their pure white flowers in dangling bouquets (pictures #1,#2& #3). The trees are so planted that the pink Shirofugen are right above the white Shogetsu (Pic. #4 & #6) Picture #6 shows the rich interplay of the cherry trees and the blooming rhododendron in the foreground.

Festival Director Linda Poole took me out to the airport to see the 150 'Akebono' being planted at Flight Path Park on Russ Baker Way at Airport Road. Here's the text from the rationale:
All the trees will be supported by two posts as shown by foreman Dirk Klein of Blue Pine Enterprises in the third photo. Also pictured with Linda is Peter Harlow of YVR.

I've attached the concept plan showing where the trees are planted.

These trees were donated by the Buddhist Light International Association.

Autumnalis Rosea has begun to bloom at 7251 Moffatt Road. The first flower actually opened about two weeks ago. Now, five trees are showing flowers.

Fantastic! Would we call these the first of the season or the last? ...

That's easy - it has to be the first, as I can't make them appear on the map if I make the range from December to April (I guess we could try to get that fixed). So they're supposed to show up as new year's babies.

    Autumnalis Rosea
11 Autumnalis Rosea (5 more inside the Venturi Park property) are blooming beautifully on the front of 7151 Moffatt Road, Richmond. The shape of trees may not be so pretty, but the flowers themselves are quite elegant.

    Whitcomb
Whitcombs are probably at their best now. The one in Dorchester Circle (7291 Moffatt), Richmond, is in full bloom. We found two inside 7151 are doing well, too. Then there is this single tree standing in the court of 7437-7439 Moffatt, though not with too many branches, displays a most elegant stance.

The "pink sea" of Whitcomb can be observed now at the parking lot of Dollar Smart store (at the intersection of Haselbridge Way and Alexandra road, Richmond). You can't miss them!

    Shosar

The five Shosar at 5560 Minoru Blvd, Richmond, are about to bloom. You can see more or less 1% of flowers showing. Nice and clean.

Thanks, Dingren. The festival map shows that they're out now, so I'm glad to see that that's true. :)

I had forgotten that 'Shosar' overlap the 'Whitcomb'. You did well when you were new scouts in 2009 to recognize that they were different.

    Accolade

The Accolade by the bridge in Minoru Park is about 5% in blossom now. We expect more of Accolade blooming in the Richmond area this time.

    Accolade

We visited Yaohan Center located at No.3 and Cambie Road, Richmond, where 12 Accolades (2 on the side of Radisson Hotel) have begun to bloom. Four of them are about 70% blooming while the rest are just beginning.

We found 12 blooming Whitcomb trees in and around Alderwood Place, 8705 General Currie Road, Richmond. Walking along the fire lane you'll see pink flowers brim over the fence. Very beautiful against the blue side of the houses. The rest are further inside of the community, but still accessible.

    Pandora

Last year on almost the same day we "discovered" 9 blooming Pandora trees on 8644 Jones Road, Richmond with lots of bees flying about.
We went there this afternoon to see how they are doing this year. Most of the trees are still just buds, but three trees are about 60% open. The majority are still waiting for more warmth. No bee in sight.

    Spire

2 of the 5 spires are blooming happily in 7337 Livingston Place which is inside the corner of Gilbert and Granville Road, Richmond. Those facing the sun come out earlier while the remaining three are still waiting.
