    Re: Kensington/Cedar Cottage

I'm encroaching on Anne Eng's territory here, but it's her own fault for dragging me over to the east side today!

The 'Somei-yoshino' trees on Victoria Drive are in full bloom. Here are two at 26th in Brewers Park (the park sign seems to be missing).
    20100309_Victoria26th_Somei-yoshino_Cutler_7685.jpg 20100309_Victoria26th_Somei-yoshino_Cutler_7688.jpg 20100309_Victoria26th_Somei-yoshino_Cutler_7690.jpg

Here are the three 'Somei-yoshino' at 16th across from John Hendry Park/Trout Lake Community Centre. These appear to have been grafted.

On the south end of the park, along the south side of 19th, is a row of 'Akebono' that run for six blocks - all the way to Copley. To get there from Nanaimo, turn west at the pedestrian light at 20th and go south a block to 19th! (The numbers should go up going south - it's very strange here). At least some of these appear to not be grafted. I've never seen an extra sepal on an 'Akebono' before.

Inside the park near the parking lot off 19th are two fairly small 'Accolade'.

That seems like a good-looking tree, and it has extra petals too. All the 'Mikuruma-gaeshi' I've looked at this year seem to have at least a few blossoms with extra petals. Same for the 'Akebono' this year.

    Re: Kensington/Cedar Cottage

At my usual Monday night restaurant haunt, I was seated with some people who lived nearby, and they suggested I could check out 20th and Knight for some 'Kanzan' photos. I was so excited to get there and find these avium 'Plena' running for two or three blocks, but then I see it was a festival favourite two years ago and Laura posted lots of photos of them that year. There are a lot of 'Kanzan' tunnel streets in the neighbourhood. I think this one 21st, and I think they run both ways from Knight.

There are 'Kanzan' all over the place in this huge neighbourhood. Check previous year postings for more locations. Here are some on 19th around Glen to Dumfries, and 26th around Glen and Prince Albert. The fourth photo, on 19th, shows an avium 'Plena' as well, near Dumfries, east of Knight.

Ukons, Shirofugens and Kanzans in bloom at Brewers Park, on April 15, 2010, although the Ukons are getting their (old-age) red eyes. The Tai Haku has finished.

This Accolade on the west side of Nanaimo, just north of Kingsway, is in full bloom on on March 19, 2011, one month later than last year (February 21, 2010, Post #145).

On a long walk today, mostly in Kensington-Cedar Cottage, although partly also in Riley Park, the only cherry tree we saw in bloom was this Whitcomb, on Killarney just south of Kingsway:

    IMG_0872.jpg IMG_0873.jpg

We did see many beautiful plum trees in bloom, though.

Well, I had rather a productive cherry tree scouting walk today. I was out to take some better pictures of this magnificent tree, at 24th & Windsor, in Glen Park, which Wendy says is a Somei Yoshino:

    20110405_24thWindsor_SomeiYoshino_Blumenthal_866.jpg 20110405_24thWindsor_SomeiYoshino_Blumenthal_869.jpg

This is quite an old tree, all by itself in the park, and I don't know how I missed it before. I guess that because the bark had so much moss and other sources of discolouration on it, I just assumed it wasn't a cherry tree - silly me! Here is a picture of the trunk. This tree does not appear to be grafted.

    20110405_24thWindsor_SomeiYoshino_Blumenthal_870.jpg

On the way to visit this tree, I also documented the previously posted Beni Shidare on private property at 29th & Elgin:

    20110405_29thElgin_BeniShidare_Blumenthal_854.jpg 20110405_29thElgin_BeniShidare_Blumenthal_855.jpg

And I found a lovely block of Whitcombs on Elgin between 27th & 26th:

    20110405_26thElgin_Whitcomb_Blumenthal_858.jpg 20110405_26thElgin_Whitcomb_Blumenthal_861.jpg

... with a young Akebono or two thrown in:

    20110405_26thElgin_Akebono_Blumenthal_862.jpg 20110405_26thElgin_Akebono_Blumenthal_863.jpg

Here's what that whole block looks like:

    20110405_26thElgin_Blumenthal_864.jpg

And nearby, at 26th and St. Catherine's there was another interesting block, with a mixture of Akebonos:

    20110405_26thStCatherines_Akebono_Blumenthal_873.jpg

    ... Somei Yoshinos:

    20110405_26thStCatherines_SomeiYoshino_Blumenthal_875.jpg 20110405_26thStCatherines_SomeiYoshino_Blumenthal_876.jpg

... and across the street, something else - what is it?

    20110405_26thStCatherines_KikiBeniShidare_Blumenthal_879.jpg 20110405_26thStCatherines_KikiBeniShidare_Blumenthal_880.jpg

... and here's what the whole block looks like, for perspective:

The one you're calling 'Somei-yoshino' at 26th and St Catherines is, I think, 'Umineko', the same as the ones across the street. Contrast the shape with your 'Somei-yoshino' tree shape. 'Umineko' are usually a bit more pointed inward at the ends of the branches, but maybe they were pruned to stay below the overhead wires.

Please say whether the trees are on 26th or St Catherines, and which whole block is it (so I can put them on the map).

Thanks, Wendy. I'm not sure at all - to be honest, I got pretty confused by those trees. The block is on 26th Ave., between St. Catherines and Prince Albert. The single tree, which has droopy branches, making me originally think it was a kind of pendula, is on the south side, and all of the others are on the north side.

I can't tell from the photos - maybe they're Yama-zakura. They don't seem to have the shape of the other trees mentioned as possibilities.

    E. 26 Avenue on both sides, from St. Catherines Street west to Prince Albert, has four Yama-zakuras which were in bloom on April 11, 2009, as per post #99. Two of the Yamas are in full bloom on April 6, 2011. The other two smaller/younger trees are just opening.

They are accompanied by two nice looking young Akebonos as per the next post.
