I visited the columnar tree at #746 West 23 Ave. on April 3. The pink colored flowers look like Rancho, which are too high to see more details. Nearby are 2 Akebonos, 2 big trees (Avium Plena) and 7 late blooming cherries on this block.

Re: Somei-yoshino - South Cambie, in Douglas Park

The Somei-yoshino at Douglas Park (20th & Willow) are blooming in all their glory. Massive trees line both the east and west sides of the central pathway, creating a canopy over the path. The colours are striking as the trees are arranged alternating with large, deep green conifers.

Re: * POSTED - Somei-yoshino - South Cambie, in Douglas Park

Update 14-APR-2008. If you hurry over to Douglas park you can still get some cherry petals stuck in your hair. The Somei-yoshino are in full bloom and when the wind blows through, clouds of blossoms go sailing across the park (the east side, as wind usually comes from the west). The central pathway is canopied by pale pink and dark green and there are a few benches to sit and enjoy. But don't expect peace and quiet. This is a very active park and community centre and it's great to see so many people enjoying it.

I was there as well today. Trees are loaded with pink buds ready to burst open. Modest showing of yellowish blooms. Likely to burst within a few days.

Takasago - South Cambie, Ash from 37th to 41st

Prunus Sato-zakura Group 'Takasago' trees stretch for two blocks down Ash St from 37th. The trees aren't much to look at but the blossoms should be "achingly beautiful" (Douglas Justice's phrase, I think, though maybe not for this cultivar). However, on these trees, it's pretty hard to get a photo where the black rot doesn't intrude. The last photo shows what you really see. I shouldn't be disparaging a festival favourite - it's nifty that there are so many of these trees, and they do demonstrate what most of them in the city look like. I can barely identify this cultivar on a healthy tree.

Sorry, I just found this. Yes, they're Somei-yoshino, VCBF Festival Favourites in 2008. There are close-ups in this posting from 2008. I'll ask to have this merged into the South Cambie neighbourhood thread in the VCBF forums.

Re: South Cambie - Cambie Median trees

I didn't know where to put this, as the Cambie St median hits four neighbourhoods. This is a list of all the cherry trees on the median between King Edward (25th) and Marine Drive. I decided to write the names of the newly planted ones while the tags were still on them. Thanks to cherry scouts Laura and Mary Ellen for joining me on what Mary Ellen called the "work party". I'm listing the trees here, but have attached them in a document for anyone who wants to print them.

I tried to remember to indicate "old" where the trees were not newly planted. Old trees had number tags, a few of which I noted in case we wanted to ask about them (and in case they're recorded somewhere).

Here is a row of 'Ukon' on Baillie north of 39th. Joseph Lin wrote me to say that "most of the people [on his walk today] agreed that the first three 'Ukon' on east side of Ballie St. north of West 39 Ave. have more green stripes and are greener than others" and he thinks they look like the Stanley Park 'Gyoiko'. See
Gyoiko and Ukon - Greenish white doubles, bronze leaves, mid-season
They looked a lot like 'Ukon' to me, and Mariko told us that this cultivar is allowed to have green lines and quite a bit of variation. I don't know. These looked very light to me.

There are a lot of late cherries on 16th from Oak to Cambie. 16th is the border between Fairview and South Cambie, so I'm putting the south side of the street ones here and will let Fairview have its share, but of course if you're walking, you get the double show.

Starting at Oak, there are several 'Shirofugen' in front of an apartment building. Note the really long stems in the third photo.
    20100419_16thOak_Shirofugen_Cutler_P1010085.jpg 20100419_16thOak_Shirofugen_Cutler_P1010087.jpg 20100419_16thOak_Shirofugen_Cutler_P1010088.jpg 20100419_16thOak_Shirofugen_Cutler_P1010095.jpg

You'll pass three good-looking P. avium 'Plena' at Laurel on the north side of 16th on your way to Willow, where you'll see this grouping of eight nice 'Amanogawa', though it looks like both sides would have originally had five of them.

Several 'Shirofugen' wrap around this building at Ash.
