I've been to visit my assigned favourite, "Umineko" in Queen Elizabeth Park. At least I hope I've got the right tree (well, four trees) near the duck pond. If I have the right trees they are adjacent to an oak tree which has a sign saying it was planted by Princess Elizabeth in 1951. No bloom yet but that gives me time to figure out how to post a photo. New to both cherry tree i.d. and digital photography!
Thanks for the heads up about 15th and Sophia. I'll wander by there today.
    cheers,
    Sarah.

There is a beautiful planting of what appear to be Whitcombs with a single Spire tree in the middle on 27th Avenue, east of St. George:

NOTE: I couldn't get a picture of the presumed Spire blossoms, because they're too high up.

These Akebonos on Manitoba & 41 Ave. started to bloom. You can not imagine how beautiful they were in snow on March 28.

Here are the Akebonos on Manitoba without the snow. They run for a few blocks north of 41st and at least a block south.

The others with the 'Spire' shaped one aren't Whitcomb cherries, wrong petal shape and color. Might be a P. x yedoensis form such as 'Akebono'. Additional views would make it easier to tell.

    * Finished - Sargentii - Riley Park, in Queen Elizabeth Park

There's a rumour that the Sargentii in Queen Elizabeth Park has come into bloom. It's by the West 33rd Avenue parking area.
23Sargentii-RileyPark.gif . [Edited by wcutler] Or maybe not yet - the location of the rumoured tree is not even in Vancouver.

Amanogawa: tall, pillar-like tree; blossoms too high for short women to pick. All blossoms appear to be growing upwards, like candles. In bloom SW corner of Quebec and 40th Avenue, April 30, 2008.
