I'm not a cherry scout of this area, but on Saturday I made a wrong turn on my way and found a small park at the south-west corner of Sophia and 15th. There were 5 Whitcomb trees and it was a lovely sight. I parked my car and took photos.

    * finished - Accolade - Mount Pleasant, Yukon from W. 14th to 15th

These three trees on Yukon between 14th and 15th were selected as favourites because they were supposed to be Autumnalis Rosea, but they are two Accolades and the third one is in question - it it might Autumnalis Rosea, or might be Accolade. There are not many blossoms yet, and the few blossoms are way up high and hard to photograph. The local resident has reported that they bloom in March, which doesn't seem to indicate an Autumnalis Rosea id.

    Re: Accolade - Mt Pleasant

Mariko and I both decided independently today that these trees are all Accolades. I tried to use her trick of looking for the full blossoms on the ground, as Autumnalis Rosea and Accolades both drop full blossoms, but this street was almost clean of blossoms, unlike the Kensington ones where the ground is littered with blossoms. I did find fallen blossoms for two, and got close enough on the third to get a good blossom shot. So here are photos from each of the three Accolades, from south to north.

These trees are not really in bloom yet.

Me too, but I thought they were accolades. Shows ya what I know.

    Anyhow, here are my pix:

This little park is stunning, and has my vote for festival favourite so far.

... and here's the street sign, with cherry blossoms, just for fun:

Laura, you went there, too! They are still very lovely from your photo!

But I can say they are Whitcombs!
    Accolade has semi-double flowers(more than 6 petals,usually more than10).
But whitcomb has single flowers(just 5 petals).
Even your 3rd photo, I can see they are single floweres!! (nicely taken!)

You might think whitcomb flowers must have more deeper colors.
I think when they started blooming, they are rather reddish pink.
But when they bloom full color becomes not very reddish.
Today I went to W.39th & Olympic (there are some Whitecombs for Festival Favorite) and I thought so!! I felt the color changed and similar to Accolade now.

Thanks, Mariko. I don't think I've got a feel for the different cultivars yet. Part of the problem is that the talks given by the guy from UBC are at times I can't attend.

6 Accolade cherry trees have 30% flowers blooming at the north side of City Hall at 12 Ave & Cambie Street, Vancouver. They will look nicer in the light of early morning or late afternoon.

Akebono Trees in full bloom at the Mount Pleasant Community Centre. Two trees at the main entrance on the northwest corner of Ontario and 16th, one poor tree caged behind the fence on the west side of Ontario, north of 15th Avenue.

The two cherry trees by the Mount Pleasant Community Centre at West 16 Ave. and Ontario Street are Somei-yoshino, because they don't have extra petals and flowers are pale pink. There is one Akebono at the opposite corner haven't bloomed yet.
[edited by wcutler 20090724: we've determined that the first two are 'Pandora'; I'm not sure about the one Joseph says is Akebono, but I think there are supposed to be three Pandoras on this site]

Red Japanease maple flowers bloomed beautifully at the entrance of the Centre.

    * Finished - Kanzan - Mount Pleasant, East 10th between Glen Dr and St Catherines

This is a stunning location - Kanzans on both sides of the street forming an arch in every direction. Photos are from the intersection of Glen Drive and 10th Avenue, looking west, north, east and then south. Note that you can't get there on 10th from Clark Drive.

This parking lot, if that's what it is (notable absence of cars), on the south side of Terminal between Quebec and Main, falls just inside Mount Pleasant boundaries. So Mount Pleasant gets one of the few displays of Pink Perfections in the city. These are three young trees planted separately on the lot, with some other plants around them. Two are right near Terminal and they jumped right out at me as being Pink Perfection a couple of weeks ago, and I finally stopped and confirmed it today. Surely this lot is just awaiting development of some sort, and that's likely to be the end of the trees.

We've been asked to look out for a couple of little specimen 'Rancho' trees in the median of Main and 11th Ave. I hope someone will look out for them starting mid-March.

Whitcomb - Mt Pleasant, 15th and Sophia

    First posting in 2009

The Prunus x subhirtella 'Whitcomb' trees on the south east corner of 15th and Sophia are showing pink buds now, so should be in bloom within a week or two. [Edited March 22, wcutler:] You can
see colour from a distance and there are maybe 30% of the blossoms out.

Here is a photo of the Whitcombs at 15th and Sophia. There appears to be winter damage on the trees and you can see two large dead branches on the one tree. I couldn't resist taking a photo of the water fountain. I'll have to work on a haiku to go with that one!

It's very windy today so sadly we're losing many petals just as they open.

These five trees are definitely worth a visit now, though still only 80% of buds open late Saturday. It's a nice location to sit on the bench and admire the trees, while listening to the laughter of young children in the adjacent playground. And just one block east of busy Main Street.

Well, they're little, not to mention a little late, and attacked by brown rot, and under the trolley lines, so will get the characteristic Vancouver street-tree down the centre from the top pruning, no doubt. But here they are. The first tree/blossom is at 11th, the other just south of 10th. The second tree seems paler, and I don't know if it's younger and bloomed sooner, so has older bleached out blossoms. I don't remember Rancho blossoms bleaching their colour, but I guess they do. Or this could be a slightly different cultivar?

    On April 26,

You can find many streets full of Kanzan rows, if you walk along Glen Drive from 10 Ave. to 18 Ave., and walk back along Clark Drive.

Rows of Kanzan on East 10 Ave. from St. Catherines to Keith St. on a busy bike route. You can also find several Ukons in the China Creek South Park at Clark Drive.

This is what you can expect to see on East 18 Ave. & Clark Dr.

Kanzan - Mount Pleasant, St. Catherines from Broadway to E. 17th Ave

This eight-block stretch is past its prime on May 7th, but the carpet of fallen blossoms adds another dimension.

The Accolades on Yukon between 14th and 15th are coming into bloom, and today I saw an Autumnalis Rosea a half block away, on 15th between Yukon and Cambie, south side of the street. It's been butchered, but it still works if you want to compare the two cultivars. This is the Autumnalis Rosea on 15th. The blossoms are tiny, about half the size of the Accolade blossoms on the trees around the corner.
