It is about 12' tall and appeared to grow nicely for two years then just turned brown very prematurely - approximately mid August 2006 (Long Island, NY). The bark from the ground and up 2' or so is seperating from the trunk. See link below for some pictures. Any suggestions what went wrong? FWIW, I lost a 5' Monkey Puzzle Tree in the same spot the year before I planted the Maple, but am pretty sure it was just the result of a marginal tree for this zone combined with an inadequate root system (less than 6 months in the ground) and unusually cold winter. The Maple is in a grouping with many other shrubs & perennials, all of which are doing fine except for some lavendar (probably too wet)? Here is a link to photos:http://hot-links.ws/acer.html

Contact nearest Extension office, see if you can get soil samples tested for likely pathogens.

    Verticillium wilt?
Cut off a branch and look for color in the sapwood.
Verticillium is not treatable to my knowledge.
