Botanical Drawing (Course)

Saturday, May 31, 2008

10am to 4pm

Course Details This one-day course is designed as an introduction for individuals interested in drawing plants. The class will begin with the basics, such as: a discussion and demonstration of different types of pencils and paper choices, plus art techniques that focus on line and continuous tone to create the illusion of 3D flower structures on paper. Participants will practice applying these methods to render botanical subjects with attention to form, volume, highlight, reflected highlight and shadows. Fresh specimens from UBC Botanical Garden will be provided to draw from, or bring your own subject of interest.

Instructor Vicky Earle. Painting and drawing have been her passions since she was very young. Coupled with a love for science, this led her to become a professional medical/scientific illustrator. She graduated from the University of Toronto with a BSc. and a specialty in Biomedical Communication. She has worked with UBC for nearly 20 years. In 1996, she began traveling to Costa Rica where her love of natural science found the perfect outlet in capturing rainforest flora in watercolour. Vicky has taken part in both group and solo shows in the Vancouver area and has sold numerous originals, giclée prints, cards and workbooks.
