Web server shutdown

Category(-ies): Web Site News

The garden's web server will be down for maintenance on Thursday, November 3rd from 7:45 AM PDT until completion (anticipated to be early afternoon). This will affect the UBC Botanical Garden, Nitobe Memorial Garden, BC Flora and the garden's experimental sites. As the garden's site will be down, the forums and Botany Photo of the Day will not be available.

Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience. -- Daniel.

Yahoo! Pick of the Day

Category(-ies): Web Site News

Once a day, Yahoo! editors pick one web site out of millions on the web as noteworthy.

On June 10, they picked UBC Botanical Garden and Centre for Plant Research's Botany Photo of the Day: Yahoo! Picks - June 10, 2005 - Botany Photo of the Day.

While Botany Photo of the Day is a venture with participants from staff and researchers (read more about Botany PotD), it also owes much credit to two people: Tim Bray, who seeded the idea in a technology lunch we had at the garden; and Dr. Quentin Cronk, the garden's director, who has fostered a garden that allows seeds of ideas to grow.

If you agree with Yahoo! and think we're doing some noteworthy activities at UBC Botanical Garden, please consider reading Dr. Cronk's letter on the importance of plants and the role of botanical gardens.

Web Site Reviewed

Category(-ies): Web Site News

Dr. Scott Russell of the University of Oklahoma runs “Scott's Botanical Links”, a site that features commentary and review of a plant-oriented web site every weekday.

For the May 19, 2005 entry, Dr. Russell reviewed this web site, which may be of interest to some site visitors. While the review was positive, I think the site can still be better -- if you have any comments about the site (e.g., “I want to find this information, but it is difficult.” or “Why don't you have this on the site?”), please send me an email (click on my name below).

Dr. Russell also mentions a botanical news page. If you are interested in checking it out, that page is here - it features recent items from UBC Botanical Garden's Photo of the Day, Scott's Botanical Links and Botanical Electronic News.

UBC BG and CPR's Web Sites

Category(-ies): Web Site News

I'm demonstrating some of the techniques and tools that we use on the BGCPR sites to attendees of the Museums and the Web 2005 conference being held in Vancouver. I thought I'd make an annotated list of what I'll be demonstrating as a handy guide for the conference attendees to come back to and visit at their leisure. If you're not attending the conference, you might find some items of interest as well, but please note that I'm going to be technical with sometimes little or no explanation for brevity's sake.

Browser requirements

Category(-ies): Web Site News

I'm anticipating a few complaints about the redesign of this and the other associated web sites which use a similar template because users who use Netscape 4 and Internet Explorer 4 cannot view this site as it appears to other users. For Netscape 4 users, the site appears as plain text, so it can still be read for content. For Internet Explorer 4 users, the browser's understanding of the underlying technologies used to create the display of the new site cause things to shift out of place so badly that some of the content becomes hidden.
