UBC Botanical Garden is open every day throughout the holidays from 10 AM to 3 PM. Nitobe Memorial Garden is closed and will reopen January 5 at 10 AM. The Shop in the Garden is closed until January 19.

Burns Bog - Finally Preserved?

The Federal Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, the Greater Vancouver Regional District and the Corporation of Delta are each contributing to an offer of $78.7 million CDN to acquire 5426 acres (2196 hectares) of land to protect and preserve Burns Bog.

The Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Member of Parliament and Minister of Natural Resources Canada, visited UBC Botanical Garden and Centre for Plant Research on Thursday, November 27, 2003, to announce important details about "Forest 2020". Forest 2020 is a federal funding initiative aimed at scoping forestry solutions to carbon sequestration, in response to Canada's Kyoto Treaty obligations. The Minister saw at first hand University of British Columbia's research on poplar and other forest trees.

On each of December 6 and 7, Judy Newton will be teaching wreath making. Using fresh plant material from the garden, Judy will teach how to make a wreath that will last through the holidays. This is a very hands-on course! Bring your pruners.
